Alberton runners shine at Comrades Marathon

The local running community of Alberton showcased their dedication and talent as they participated in the renowned Comrades Marathon on June 11.
Among the 16 000 participants who tackled the grueling 87km down run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, several runners from Alberton Athletics Club put their endurance to the test.
This year’s race witnessed a historic 92.68% finish rate, the highest in Comrades history, along with the breaking of both the men’s and women’s course records.
Among the notable finishers from Alberton Athletics Club were Thulani Dlamini, Alana Khoury, Kirsty Koekemoer, Sanele Gcaba, and Vusumuzi Radebe, who tackled the challenging race as novices.
Experienced runners Khulekani Ndhlovu, Darius van der Schyf, Hendrik Jansen, Sandile Mkhize, and Anton Ferreira showcased their strength and determination by earning their well-deserved back-to-back medals.
Once again, Ernest du Toit demonstrated his exceptional skills, securing a silver medal and crossing the finish line as the first runner from Alberton Athletics Club.

His impressive time of 07:24 marked a remarkable improvement of 35 minutes compared to his previous best.
Anton Ferreira also made a significant achievement by completing the race in under eight hours, earning a well-deserved Bill Rowan medal for his exceptional performance.
The club’s accomplishments included three Robert Mtshali medals for finishing between nine and 10 hours, demonstrating the diverse talents within the club.
