Calvary Christian College hosts inaugural inter-primary futsal event and festival
In an exciting showcase of talent and teamwork, the players from various schools took to the court with thrilling futsal fever.
Calvary Christian College broke new ground at its first inter-primary school futsal event recently.
Five schools, including Naturena Primary School One and Naturena Primary School Two, Ormonde Primary, Aloe Ridge and Calvary Christian College Primary School, took part.
This event follows two weeks after Calvary hosted a similar inter-high school challenge.
The event started with a walk of each school’s players, properly introduced and acknowledged by the spectators.
The principal Willem Barkhuizen welcomed the players and coaches, followed by a prayer by pastor Sandile Zwane.
The players demonstrated remarkable skill for such young players. There were superb shots at goal and equally magnificent saves by the goalies. In the midfield, some teams controlled the ball and played better than others.
Rolling substitutes were allowed, and the games flowed fluently from one side to the other. Ormonde Primary won the soccer tournament and Naturena Primary was runners-up.
The best coach was Jovis Menjelele and the best goalkeeper of the tournament award went to Boikanno Moiloa of Aloe Ridge.
Chaloh Henning was the most influential player in the tournament. The commentator on the day, Lihle Ntshuntshe, dubbed Henning ‘Short Stuff’. This young man was acknowledged for his deft touches on the ball, tireless work rate and great skill.
Ntshuntshe provided all with great touches of humour and a minute-by-minute running commentary on the games being played.
The event ended with the awarding of medals and a trophy to the winning team and medals to the runners-up.
After the singing of the national anthem, pastor Zwane closed in prayer.
The event was coupled with a summer festival featuring an entrepreneur’s day for the school’s Grade Nine learners, an open day and visits from the JMPD and the local fire brigade.
