Clubhouse in Turffontein ravaged by a huge fire

The fire engulfed Turffontein-based Sporting FC’s clubhouse and restaurant, leaving the roof completely destroyed.

A massive fire ravaged a clubhouse at Christopherson Park, on the intersection of President and Stanton streets in Turffontein.

The clubhouse was home to a restaurant and Sporting FC’s home grounds.

Firefighters arrived on the scene to stop the fire.

Emergency services rushed to the scene to contain the raging blaze, but the fire had already destroyed parts of the clubhouse.

The cause of the fire is not clear, but there is a suspicion that it could have originated from a spark from the braai stands.

Inside, the fire damaged the soccer team’s changing rooms and restaurant tables and the walls turned black because of the smoke. The clubhouse’s roof is destroyed.

Nobody was killed or injured in the fire.

Sporting FC change rooms were also damaged.

Jock Santos, Sporting FC chairperson, said the damage amounts to thousands of rands.

“We still have to assess the extent of the damage, but repairing the roof alone will cost anything between R50 000 to R60 000. We are appealing to the community and willing donors to help us with monetary or other donations to rebuild the clubhouse,” said Santos.

Willing donors may contact Santos on 082 899 7972.
