WATCH: Sewage leak in The Hill sparks community concerns

New reference number for the open hole at The Hill – Joburg Water.

Effluent seeping through 55 Grampian Road, The Hill, poses a health hazard in the community.

This was after Joburg Water dug a hole to fix the pipe in December at the corner of Grampian Road and 5th Avenue.

A TLB digs the hole for the contractors to work on the pipes.

The hole, filled with water, is also a danger to the community, especially to children. The schools are opening soon and primary school learners walk down 5th Avenue.

A community member, Gareth Dorrington, said Joburg Water escalated the reference number 40007935 time and time again, with no joy in having the issue resolved.

“Joburg Water left this hole uncovered since the middle of December and has still not done backfill or sorted out the sewage leak. The hole is deep and dangerous,” he said.

Southern Courier contacted Joburg Water for comment and they mentioned the previous reference number (40007935) was marked as ‘closed.’

They reopened the matter under a new reference number (40017128), which has now been issued. They also confirmed they will follow up with the depot about the progress.
