WATCH: Tulisa Park residents seek solution to abandoned property crisis
An abandoned property in Tulisa Park is overrun by vagrants, sparking health and safety concerns.
The pressing issue of 16 Austen Street in Tulisa Park, where more than 30 illegal residents have taken over the abandoned and burnt-down home, was addressed at a meeting on January 28.
The property has become notorious for extreme pollution, fires, noise and dirt, posing significant health and safety risks to the community.

Clr Faeeza Chame of Ward 57 said the property has been abandoned for almost 13 years despite efforts to contact the owner.

The water meter was tampered with, resulting in exorbitant bills. The councillor advised that the City of Joburg take over the property and remove and relocate the illegal occupants to resolve the issue.

This situation highlights the need to urgently address abandoned properties and prevent illegal occupation, ensuring a safer and healthier environment for Tulisa Park residents.

“The city opened a court case regarding 16 Austen Street in Tulisa Park. It will take about 14 days to process, and we will get feedback from the council on what actions will be taken against the illegal residents,” said Chame.

“I understand the residents living around the property want action to be taken, and so it will. Together with the CoJ, we will seek to clean up this property and make the area whole again,” she continued.
