Hoërskool President hockey team raises funds with Spur shift
The players traded their sticks for service when they worked hard to raise the necessary funds.
To raise funds for new team jackets, Hoërskool President’s girls’ first-team hockey players took on a challenge that helped them get closer to their goal and offered a learning experience.
The team decided on a shadow shift at the Golden Falcon Spur in Gold Reef City. The atmosphere at the Spur inspired the decision to shadow the staff. The players felt provided the perfect opportunity to learn about the service industry.
Each team member was paired with a waiter or waitress for the evening and learnt about taking orders, serving customers and ensuring smooth operations. The players rose to the challenge despite the fast-paced setting and high pressure.
“We were well aware of the expectations. We didn’t let the pressure get in the way. We made sure to stay focused and help each other whenever we could,” said the team.
The rush of serving hungry customers came with challenges, and the team struggled at first with the pace, particularly managing orders and walking up and down the stairs while balancing drinks. However, the players quickly adapted.
“At first, it felt overwhelming, but we stayed focused and kept a steady pace. By the end of the night, we had learnt a lot, not just about serving but about teamwork,” said the players.
Golden Falcon Spur manager Ketla Mogoiwa said, “The shadow shift night was an incredible experience with the hockey girls. Their energy, enthusiasm and team spirit were incredible, making it a memorable evening. The support from parents added to the excitement, turning the night into a celebration of coming together to enjoy great food. We loved hosting them and can’t wait to welcome them back.”
With the funds raised, the first-team hockey players are one step closer to getting their new jackets, but beyond that, the experience provided lessons in teamwork and responsibility, skills that will serve them well on and off the field.
