Johannesburg celebrates Earth Hour

Earth Hour celebration, promoting sustainability and climate resilience.

The City of Johannesburg, in partnership with the World Wide Fund (WWF) and the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), hosted a successful Earth Hour celebration at the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens on March 22.

The event, held under the theme ‘Biggest Hour for Earth’, united hundreds of residents in a call to action for nature and the planet.

The celebration featured various activities and competitions promoting sustainability and environmentally conscious behaviours.

Attendees were inspired to plan their own eco-friendly activities, such as tree-planting events, plogging, and zero-waste picnics.

Mzukisi Gwata, principal specialist at the city’s Environment & Infrastructure Services Department, expressed gratitude to all participants.

“Joburg’s commitment to sustainability and climate resilience through initiatives like energy-saving programs and urban greening projects are what will aid our city in creating earth conscious citizens,” said Gwata.
