WOMan NPO invites community to support ‘Run and Walk 4 a Period’

The need for sanitary products is ongoing and affects many girls’ ability to attend school, so this initiative aims to address that gap.

To support young girls in the community, Well Organised Men (WOMan) NPO will host a Run and Walk 4 a Period fun run of 5km and 9km races aimed at collecting sanitary pads.

On May 17 at 06:30, residents are encouraged to lace up their running shoes, gather their friends and family, and join in on a day of fitness and fun at Kibler Park Recreation Centre.

Entry is a pack of sanitary pads. This event promises something for everyone while making a meaningful impact on the lives of those who need it most.

The race was previously postponed for reasons such as outstanding Joint Operations Committee (JOC) requirements, lack of public registration, no confirmed sponsorships to assist with the event costs, safety concerns for all participants and attendees, and protecting vendors from possible non-compliance issues.

“We appreciate everyone’s understanding and continued support,” said the coordinators. “We have finalised the new date to May 17 and we strongly encourage community participation.”

The organisation has also started Hike for a Period pad drive at the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve which will take place every Saturday – once a month, which started on April 12.

This drive has been initiated to raise awareness of the challenges that girls are facing in schools, helping a girl child comfortably attend school without shame.

The organisers of the drive aim to collect sanitary pads for the adopted schools and recreation centres around the South of Johannesburg and households in need, to raise funds for the organisation’s operating costs and to sustain it, introducing and exposing the organisation with its programmes to the public and engaging the organisation with the community.

The Hike 4 A Period campaign includes engaging in a hiking trail to collect sanitary pads and non-perishable food.

To make the fun run and the campaign a success, WOMan NPO needs sponsorship and community participation.

So whether you’re joining the fun run, participating in sports activities or cheering from the sidelines, your involvement will help ensure that girls have access to the sanitary products.
