Support Bulelani to represent SA in chess abroad
The former Townsview Primary learner needs financially assistance for all these events and cannot do it without your help.
Chess South Africa has invited Oakdene’s Bulelani Stephen (16) to participate in a chess tournament in Colombia on August 6.
He needs financial help to fulfil his dream of representing his country. He has qualified for three international chess tournaments: FIDE World Cadet Chess Championship, African Youth Chess Championship, and the Commonwealth Chess Championship.
After a week of intense competition at the South African Junior Closed Chess Championship in Cape Town, his outstanding performance earned him a spot as the second player selected to represent South Africa in three major international events.
Passion for chess
Bulelani’s passion for chess developed in 2013 when he was four years old. He challenged his family members and guests in chess games almost daily until everyone was tired of chess—except him.
He selected his school preferences based on whether organised chess was available as part of the school activities or curriculum.
He plays chess on holidays, at home, at parks, online, and everywhere he can. His personal reading books and gifts are all chess-related.
What it will mean for him
He has consciously worked hard to qualify for all three upcoming international chess tournaments, where he has the opportunity to represent his country.
This will open international scholarship opportunities for him to study at recognised chess universities overseas for his tertiary education.
He wants to achieve the status of International Chess Master and consequently pursue chess as a career. These platforms are bringing these opportunities closer to him.
How can people help
Support Bulelani’s sponsorship drive to help him cover the costs of representing South Africa internationally with his team.
Sponsorship contributions can be made via his BackaBuddy page, directly into his bank account, or directly to Chess SA using his name and surname as a reference.
