Morero survives motion of no confidence, remains Johannesburg mayor
While Speaker Nobuhle Mthembu was removed, Mayor Sello ‘Dada’ Morero and Chief Whip Clr Sthembiso Zungu retained their positions during a decisive council vote focused on leadership and service delivery.
The Executive Mayor, Sello ‘Dada’ Morero, remains at the helm after the majority voted for him to stay on June 25 during the City of Johannesburg’s 31st Ordinary Council meeting.
The motions of no confidence were prioritised as the first item on the agenda. Council debated and voted on three motions targeting the executive mayor, chief whip Clr Sthembiso Zungu, and Speaker Clr Nobuhle Mthembu.
The DA tabled the motions against the mayor and chief whip, while the motion against the speaker was brought by Al Jama-ah.
As a result, the executive mayor and chief whip retained their positions, while the speaker was removed.
Morero said the outcome was a clear indication that the majority of parties, representing Johannesburg residents, were voting for stability, continuity and service delivery.
“We acknowledge that Johannesburg faces serious challenges, but we are focused on turning the situation around,” he said. “We have implemented solutions and interventions that are moving us in the right direction. We are building the Johannesburg we want to see.
“We are supported by the Presidential Support Package, the Bomb Squad, the private sector and civil society.
“We reaffirm our commitment to implementing the IDP and its budget, as well as the high-impact service delivery programme.
“We remain committed to growing the economy of Johannesburg, which will be supported by the Digital Public Infrastructure to be rolled out in this financial year.”
