Christmas in July brings joy and essentials to those in need
What has become an annual tradition for the De Freitas Foundation (DFF), the Christmas in July breakfast took place on July 26 – and this year, it was bigger and better than ever.
Due to the growing popularity of the event, this year’s celebration was opened up to both men and women. In previous years, it was exclusive to ladies, but increasing demand led to the inclusion of gentlemen as well.
The breakfast was held at the ever-popular Mundo Português restaurant in Primrose, which was packed to capacity. Guests embraced the festive spirit, with each attendee bringing a Christmas gift. More than 100 donated items – including toiletries, towelettes, and shampoos – were collected and will be distributed to those most in need.
Over the years, the DFF has found that, after food and clothing, hygiene items are among the most needed yet least donated essentials. This is what inspired the idea behind the Christmas in July breakfast, a concept initiated by DFF board member Jeanette de Freitas.
While the primary aim of the breakfast is to support the less fortunate, it is also a joyful and entertaining event, featuring music, humour, and raffle prizes.
Jeanette expressed her gratitude to all the ladies and gentlemen who attended, noting that their support goes a long way in advancing the foundation’s work.
This year’s guest speaker was Susana Ribeiro, a successful businesswoman who shared her inspiring story of overcoming life’s challenges, including her battle with cancer.
DFF board member Manny de Freitas once again served as the event’s enthusiastic master of ceremonies. Special thanks were extended to Rosária de Freitas (DFF board member) and Lourdes dos Santos, a long-time friend and dedicated volunteer, for their behind-the-scenes contributions.
Looking ahead, the DFF’s next major event will take place on November 16 – its annual lunch and main fundraising initiative for the year.
