SACA conference tackles sustainability in cemeteries

Johannesburg hosted key conference on cemetery sustainability and innovation.

The South African Cemeteries Association (SACA) hosted its biennial conference over three days, from 25 to 27 August.

The conference was held in collaboration with the City of Johannesburg and Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ).

The event, themed Eternal Evolution – Transforming for Sustainability, brought together 120 participants, including academic researchers, professionals, and government and industry representatives.

The conference explored various themes, including sustainable and eco-friendly memorial practices, technological advancements in memorial spaces, and inclusive and culturally sensitive memorialisation.

Mayor of Johannesburg, Dada Morero, praised the initiative, saying, “The City of Johannesburg is committed to ensuring that our cemeteries are not only places of reverence but also sustainable and environmentally friendly spaces. This conference has provided valuable insights into how we can achieve this goal.”

Following the conference, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo announced plans to implement reforms in cemeteries across the city.

These reforms include the introduction of eco-friendly burial practices, improved waste management, and the use of technology to enhance cemetery management. JCPZ will also prioritise cultural sensitivity and accessibility in urban memorial planning.

The conference highlighted the importance of adapting cemeteries to climate change and promoting biodiversity and conservation.

Delegates also discussed innovative solutions for efficient space use in burial sites, as well as funding and resources for cemetery management.

The SACA conference provided a platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration among stakeholders in the cemetery industry.
