Kibler Park mechanic wins dream trip to watch Arsenal live in London

Community hero Dean Sahabodien was recognised in Gooner with a Good Heart competition for his generosity and lifelong passion for football

Dean Sahabodien, a beloved mechanic in the Kibler Park community, has been announced as the winner of the Gooner with a Good Heart competition, securing an all-expenses–paid trip to London to watch Arsenal play live at the Emirates Stadium.

The 947 and Betway Gooner with a Great Heart competition, which ran in early 2026, sought to reward a dedicated Arsenal fan who generously serves their community.

A life of service

Dean (53) has lived in Kibler Park for 20 years. A father of three and grandfather of two, he has spent much of his life building strong connections within the community.

“Being the local mechanic has allowed me to grow close-knit ties with the community and with clients who have become good friends of mine,” shared Dean.

Known for his generosity, Dean regularly assists stranded motorists, offers help at all hours, and often gives from his own pocket to ease others’ burdens. His family describes him as a hero with a heart devoted to the people around him, the community he serves, the work he loves, the charity he gives, and his passion for Arsenal Football Club.

Dean’s love for sport, particularly soccer, began in his childhood, playing in the streets of Eldorado Park. “I always look forward to winding down by sitting in front of the television and watching soccer. It brings a sense of entertainment and togetherness, especially among my friends,” he said.

A dream come true

Dean was nominated for the competition by his children, who wrote a heartfelt message praising their father’s unwavering generosity and passion for the sport and community.

Dean was completely unaware that he had been entered into the competition. “I had no idea that I was entered into this competition. It all came as a surprise to me,” he shared.

When he found out he had won, Dean was overwhelmed. “I was absolutely speechless, filled with excitement and even a little emotional. I am still in shock and disbelief that my dream has become a reality,” shared Dean. Winning the competition, he added, was a dream come true. “It means the world to me. I cannot wait for touchdown on London soil and to enter the Emirates Stadium.”

Dean sees sport as having shaped his life. “Playing sports as a youngster kept me fit, grounded, focused and disciplined. It helped build lifelong friendships. Sports have always been my conversation starter,” he emphasised.

His favourite sporting moment includes meeting local soccer icon Benni McCarthy and now winning this competition.

From local fields to the Emirates Stadium

Looking ahead, Dean hopes the experience will deepen his love for Arsenal and inspire others.

“After having the opportunity to watch them play live, I feel this will increase my support for them and my loyalty towards the club. It will also motivate me even more to debate and stand for my team in every soccer argument and conversation. I even feel that I may recruit more Arsenal fans within my friends and family.”

Dean also offered words of encouragement to young sports enthusiasts and aspiring participants: “Never give up on your dreams and goals, never stop supporting your team, win or lose. Your loyalty goes a long way. Who would’ve thought that my dream would become a reality today through Betway, Anele and the Club, my family, as well as the unconditional support of my community, family and friends. I am extremely grateful and humbled, thank you.”

Following hundreds of heartfelt submissions from across South Africa, Dean stood out for his authenticity, compassion and the visible difference his work has made in the lives of those around him.

These qualities reflect the spirit of The Gooner with a Good Heart and Betway’s belief in the power of sport to uplift communities both on and off the field.

Thanks to Betway’s partnership with Arsenal Football Club, Dean will soon embark on an unforgettable journey to London, where he will experience the electric matchday atmosphere at Emirates Stadium, meet fellow supporters, and enjoy exclusive behind–the–scenes moments.
