JMPD issues urgent safety warning ahead of long weekend traffic surge

A heightened law enforcement presence will be deployed across Johannesburg’s high-risk areas this long weekend as authorities intensify efforts to prevent avoidable road deaths.

As the City of Johannesburg prepares for the upcoming long weekend, the JMPD has issued an urgent appeal to both motorists and pedestrians to prioritise road safety.

While an overall increase in traffic movement is anticipated, the JMPD’s primary concern remains the rate of pedestrian fatalities. Although there has been a steady decline in total road fatalities in recent years, the continued loss of pedestrian lives remains a serious concern.

The JMPD emphasises that every life lost is one too many, noting that pedestrian fatalities still account for a disproportionately high number of preventable tragedies in the city.

Through data analysis, the JMPD has identified several high-risk areas for pedestrian incidents. These locations have shown a concerning pattern of accidents, particularly involving individuals attempting to cross high-speed freeways.

Key hotspots include:

• N12 Freeway (Eldorado Park stretch): A critical area where illegal pedestrian crossings frequently result in fatal collisions.

• M1 Freeway (Booysens area): High-speed traffic combined with pedestrian movement near off-ramps creates a particularly dangerous environment.

Guidelines for pedestrians

The JMPD has made a direct appeal to pedestrians, stressing that lives are worth more than shortcuts, and urging strict adherence to safety guidelines:

• Stay off freeways: Walking on or crossing freeways such as the N12 and M1 is both illegal and extremely dangerous, as high-speed vehicles cannot stop suddenly.

• Use designated crossings: Pedestrian bridges and safe crossing points should always be used, even if they require longer travel distances.

• Be visible: Pedestrians walking near roads at night or in low-light conditions are encouraged to wear bright or reflective clothing to improve visibility to motorists.

• Avoid distractions and impairment: Walking near traffic under the influence of alcohol is strongly discouraged, and pedestrians are urged to avoid using mobile phones or headphones while crossing roads.

Drivers to take note

Motorists are also urged to exercise extreme caution, particularly in the identified high-risk zones. The JMPD advises drivers to:

• Reduce speed: Adhere to speed limits designed to allow adequate reaction time.

• Stay alert: Avoid distractions, as brief lapses in attention can have severe consequences.

• Expect the unexpected: Remain vigilant for pedestrians who may attempt illegal crossings in areas such as Eldorado Park, Booysens, and other major arterial routes.

The JMPD has confirmed that it will not remain passive during the long weekend period. A heightened law enforcement presence will be deployed in identified hotspots to help prevent further loss of life.

Officers will also engage with pedestrians found in restricted areas and remove them from dangerous situations.

For emergencies or to report road incidents, the public is urged to contact 011 375 5911 or 0800 002 587.
