Futura Special School hosted an Autism awareness walk and fun day in Ridgeway
Futura Special School brought the community together on April 18 for its third annual autism awareness big walk and fun day.
It turned its Ridgeway campus into a celebration of inclusion, support, and family fun.
The event drew hundreds of attendees for a 3km awareness walk followed by a full day of activities.
The ‘Have Fun with Family’ theme was on full display as families took part in the walk under the banner #LetsWalkForAutism.
After crossing the finish line, children made for the colourful jumping castles and inflatable obstacle courses while parents browsed food stalls offering delicious cuisine.

Fun games and dedicated kids’ activities kept the field busy throughout the day.
Organised under the message, ‘Autism is a journey that doesn’t need to be walked alone’, the event aimed to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and foster community support for learners and families affected by autism.
Partners included Gauteng Province, City of Johannesburg, and Vuyokethu’s Haven.
Attendee Lerato Mokoena, who walked with her son and niece, said the event meant more than entertainment.

“We came for the fun day, but we left feeling seen. My son is autistic, and spaces like this, where he can run, play, and be celebrated without judgment, are rare
“The 3km walk was perfect – not too long, and everyone cheered each other on. The jumping castles were a huge hit, and I met three other moms from our area who were going through the same journey. For R20, we got awareness, community, and hope. Futura reminded us we’re not walking alone,” said Lerato.
