Turn team time into impact with Cotlands’ play challenge

A simple card game can unlock real opportunities for vulnerable young learners.

Cotlands is calling on corporates, universities, schools, parents, children, and retirement communities across South Africa to join a powerful movement that celebrates the importance of play while directly supporting children who need it most.

In celebration of World Play Day on May 28 and in the lead-up to the International Day of Play on June 11, Cotlands has launched its Deal for a Difference Card Game Challenge.

This simple, joyful and impactful initiative invites participants to transform just one hour of their day into meaningful connection, shared laughter and tangible impact for vulnerable children.

Participants are encouraged to host a one-hour card game session at any time between May 28 and June 11 and donate R28 per person.

These contributions will enable Cotlands to expand access to play-based early learning opportunities for children who would otherwise grow up without safe, stimulating environments in which to learn through play.

While the impact reaches far beyond homes, schools, boardrooms, and workplaces, the act of playing cards together delivers immediate value to those taking part.

Card games create space for human connection in environments often defined by deadlines and demands. They encourage conversation, teamwork, and light-hearted competition, helping to strengthen relationships among colleagues, students, families, and peers.

Beyond social connection, card games also support mental well-being and cognitive development. Simple games improve focus, memory, and problem-solving skills, while offering a welcome break from screen time and workplace stress. In corporate settings, they can help break down silos and flatten hierarchy.

In universities, they foster peer interaction and inclusion. In schools, they support social development. In retirement communities, they encourage engagement, laughter, and mental agility. In homes, they create meaningful moments between parents and children.

Dr Monica Stach, chief executive officer of Cotlands, said, “Play brings people together in a way few other activities can. What begins as a simple card game among family, colleagues, or friends becomes something far greater when it translates into real opportunities for young, vulnerable children to learn, grow and thrive.”

The campaign is designed to be flexible, inclusive, and easy to implement. Organisations and individuals can choose any day within the campaign window, making participation simple regardless of schedule or group size. Every game played becomes part of a shared national effort to champion the power of play.

Beyond fundraising, the Deal for a Difference challenge is a reminder that play is not optional- it is essential. It builds relationships, supports wellbeing, strengthens communities, and helps Cotlands reach more children with the critical foundation they need for lifelong learning.

Join the movement. Take up the one-hour challenge. Host a card game. Reconnect with the people around you. Donate R28 per person. And help give a young child the chance to learn through play.
