Tiny Tacklers: Empowering young rugby stars

Founded by preschool teacher Kobie van der Merwe-Da Silva, the initiative nurtures rugby skills, fitness, and confidence in children aged three to five.

Tiny Tacklers, a rugby development programme, is celebrating its second year of operation, having started in 2024.

Founded by passionate preschool teacher and children’s fitness enthusiast, Kobie van der Merwe-Da Silva, the programme aims to develop young children’s safety awareness, basic rugby skills, fine and gross motor skills, fitness, and conditioning.

Initially partnering with Orionland Kleuterskool in 2024, Tiny Tacklers has expanded to work with multiple schools in Joburg south in 2025. They have also inducted their first two female participants.

The programme’s goal is to provide a solid foundation for future rugby champions while promoting a love for the sport and physical activity, for kids aged three to five years old.

With a team of three coaches, Kobie, Ashley van der Merwe, and Steven Heymans, Tiny Tacklers is dedicated to helping children develop essential skills, build confidence, and have fun while playing rugby.

By normalising girls’ participation in rugby, the programme also hopes to create opportunities for young female athletes to thrive in the sport.
