WATCH: Johannesburg City Marathon returned for it’s second edition

Johannesburg runners took on the City's Marathon, now in its second edition, passing some of the city's iconic landmarks on route.

The Johannesburg City Marathon, organised by the Johannesburg Harriers Athletics Club, took place on March 30 starting at the Klipriviersberg Recreation Centre in Kibler Park, south of Johannesburg.

This premier road-running event offered three race distances: 42.2km (marathon), 21.1km (half-marathon), and 10km.

The start times for the 42.2km and 21.1km races were at 06:00, while the 10km race started at 06:30.

The route took runners past iconic Johannesburg landmarks, including Gold Reef City, the historic Johannesburg Central Police Station, the Constitutional Court precinct, and the Nelson Mandela Bridge, with a unique opportunity to run on the M1 freeway.

Natalie Roelf, Harriers Athletics club secretary, spoke about the success of the marathon’s second edition.

“The 2025 edition was truly a success. We saw a competitive marathon with serious runners making good time. We hosted pro runners and novices alike, which is truly a testament to the versatility of the Johannesburg Marathon. There were also no medical incidents, which makes me happy,” said Roelf.

The race was a Comrades Marathon qualifier, making it an essential event for runners looking to qualify for the Comrades Marathon.

The event promised a scenic yet challenging course through the heart of Gauteng, with well-supported refreshment stations and a vibrant race-day energy.

Seasoned runners and those just starting all displayed their prowess at the Johannesburg City Marathon.
