Alberton and Bassonia JKA Black Belts excelled at the Karate Syndicate Championships, where they once again demonstrated the two dojos’ strength and depth, delivering a showcase of skill, speed, and precision.
Spectators were treated to a high standard of competition, especially in the black belt senior divisions, with superb kata displays and fast, hard-fought kumite bouts that made for challenging judging decisions.

• Men’s open kata champion: Matthew Ho Tong (Bassonia JKA)
• Ladies’ open kata champion: Alysha Govender (Alberton JKA)
• Men’s open kumite champion: Chadwin Deysel (Bassonia JKA)
• Ladies’ open kumite champion: Taylin Bester (Bassonia JKA)
The dojo teams further underlined their dominance in the Unison Kata division, placing first, second, and one joint third, with Heidelberg Karate Club taking the other joint third position.

A total of almost 200 competitors from 11 dojos took part. Together, Alberton and Bassonia JKA, run by Senseis Bruce Smith (7th Dan) and Karyn Smith (6th Dan), brought home almost 170 of the 300 medals awarded. The level of performance left no doubt as to why the clubs’ members are regarded among the finest karateka in South Africa.
Karate classes for all ages are open Monday to Thursday, with training focused on fitness, discipline, self-defence, and traditional karate. All instructors are first-aid certified, police-cleared, safeguarding accredited, and experienced in teaching all ages.
