Suspected poachers arrested

The community of Phagameng in Modimolle reacted instantly when the Modimolle Police and security services chased suspected rhino poachers on Thursday 14 March.

Two of the three suspected poachers were caught thanks to their quick reaction.

According to a police source close to the investigation, the police received information that a vehicle with three suspected poachers was entering Modimolle from Mookgophong’s direction around 09:00. The three men inside the vehicle jumped out and fled in the direction of the houses in Extension 10 when their vehicle was stopped by a police officer. The vehicle was allegedly previously seen in the vicinity of game farms with rhinos.

When Die Pos arrived on the scene, residents could be seen running into the veld and through the neighbourhood in pursuit of the suspects. An officer on the scene said that the police were grateful for their quick assistance in catching the fleeing suspects as the many eyes in the area prevented their escape.

According to the police source, who wishes to remain anonymous, a .375 Winchester rifle and ammunition were found hidden in the vehicle. No rhino horns were found. The rifle will be sent away for forensic tests to determine if it can be connected to any other poaching incidents.

The two men appeared in the Modimolle Magistrates Court on Friday 15 March on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. They will appear again on Monday 25 March.
