Muvhango’s Meiki now soapie director

Actress Nthabiseng Tau has elected to try her hand at directing after her 'Muvhango' character was finally completely written out of the storyline.

Tau played the role of moody Meiki in the SABC2 soap opera, but the character was gradually faded out after both viewers and Tau herself reportedly became disinterested.

Meiki gave birth to the baby of her best friend Mapule’s fiancé, after sleeping with him on the eve of their wedding. Her mental health gradually unravelled, until she finally officially exited the show after being institutionalised.

According to the Daily Sun, a ‘Muvhango’ insider confirmed Meiki’s departure from the soap, saying: “The reason behind the canning of Meiki’s character was that the producers had run out of ideas and viewers were getting tired of the character.”

Keen to broaden her horizons, Tau reportedly admitted to show producers that she’d lost interest in her character, but expressed her eagerness to learn more about other aspects of the industry. Consequently, the publication reports, she has “since been appointed as the soapie’s director”.

When approached for comment, Tau referred the Daily Sun to ‘Muvhango’ publicist Kgalema Mametsa, who confirmed that the “actress wanted to grow in the acting industry, but her character has been phased out”.
