Nommer 37 is thrilling ride

The South African crime thriller that's garnered international critical acclaim opens locally today.

The wait is finally over as South African crime thriller Nommer 37, opens today.

“My hope is that it will be seen by all South Africans because the story is so universal and relatable, whilst giving us a peek into a world that’s familiar to some but unknown by most, through the lens of a voyeur,” says director and writer Nosipho Dumisa.

The film’s world premiere was at the International SXSW Film Festival in Texas. It was selected to represent the country at the 18th annual Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival in Switzerland from July 6 to 14, 2018.

Dark Star Pictures has exclusive distribution rights in North America and the North American screening of the full-length feature will kick off in New York and Los Angeles, followed by an early video-on-demand release.

Nommer 37 is based on the SA Film and Television Award-winning short film of the same name, co-directed by Nosipho Dumisa and Travis Taute.

Set in Haven Mansions, a fictional block of apartments in the fictional Cape Flats suburb of New Haven, Randal Hendricks (Irshaad Ally), who has recently become a paraplegic, gets a pair of binoculars from his girlfriend, Pam (Monique Rockman).

He’s in debt to Emmie (Danny Ross), a sadistic loan shark, and when he witnesses a powerful criminal called Lawyer (David Manuel) commit murder through his binoculars, he initiates a blackmail scheme in a bid to settle his debt.

The film also stars Sandi Schultz, Deon Lotz, Elton Landrew, Ephraim Gordon and Luke Jansen.
