Two men gunned down in Germiston South, police investigate double murder

Police and emergency services rushed to the scene of a shooting on Wednesday morning.

Germiston South was shocked to the core on Wednesday morning when a double murder occurred.

At about 5.25am, on the corner of Joubert and Selkirk streets, a man aged approximately 30, was shot by an unknown assailant.

Then minutes later on the corner of Selkirk and President streets another man, aged 48, was gunned down in his car, a black Mazda 3.

Const Maxwell Mabunda, the communications officer for the Germiston police, told the GCN that eight 9mm cartridges were found on the first murder scene and witnesses had seen a Toyota Quantum driving down the road.

“Witnesses told the police they heard six to eight gunshots at 5.25am and then saw the Mazda coming slowly down Selkirk Street before it stopped.

“An unknown man wearing a white top and hoodie then shot another six to nine shots at the vehicle,” said Mabunda.

Mabunda added that a witness went outside after the shooter had ran away and found the victim in the car with his foot on the accelerator and all the doors locked.

“The man’s girlfriend arrived and contacted emergency services.

“They broke the driver’s and the passenger’s window and felt for a pulse, but found none,” said Mabunda.

“The crime scene was secured and nine 9mm cartridges were found.

“Police are investigating two cases of murder.”

Russel Meiring, from the ER24 communications office, said ER24 personnel arrived on the scene at 6.40am to find a light motor vehicle parked halfway on the pavement.

A man was found inside while a second man was found roughly 500m further up the road.

“ER24 medics assessed both men and found that the man lying in the road had sustained a gunshot wound to the head while the man in the vehicle had sustained several gunshot wounds,” said Meiring.

“Unfortunately, both men had already succumbed to their injuries.

“Nothing could be done for them and they were declared dead on scene.”
