An articulated truck was torched at about 8.26pm on the R554 eastbound near the Rondebult Bird Sanctuary in Klippoortjie Park on Saturday.

Firefighters from the Wadeville, Alberton and Tokoza fire stations responded to the call with four fire engines.

“Two industrial pumpers and two water tankers were sent to extinguish the well-alight vehicle,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS).

“They were hampering the smooth operation of the firefighters, so the police had to be called to come and enforce the law.”

Ntladi added that information received on the scene indicated that the truck had been hijacked and the driver, assaulted and left at the point of the hijacking allegedly near the Roodekop industrial area of Germiston.

The truck was then torched in Klippoortjie Park.
