‘Unexpected’ visit from the Red Ants

Men in red demolish illegal shacks.

Residents of the Delport informal settlement, in Primrose, were left holding their heads in their hands when the Red Ants stormed into their community and demolished illegal shacks, on Wednesday.

“Not everybody knew the shacks would be demolished today,” said Monica Kobo, a resident of the informal settlement.
“Residents in the Zone 6 area in Delport were told, but the rest of us did not know.”
Kobo alleged that the residents in Zone 6 found out only on Tuesday that shacks would be demolished.
“We just saw the trucks coming, we didn’t know, it was unexpected,” she said.
The Primrose police, however, told the GCN that residents of the illegal shacks were already warned to find alternative accommodation last year.
According to information supplied by the police, community leaders and the metro agreed to seal off an area in Delport, but, residents allegedly paid people to be allowed to have their illegal shacks placed in that area.
On Wednesday afternoon, the GCN requested official comment from the metro, but they failed to respond in time for publication.
“The Red Ants did not cause any trouble,” said Kobo.
“If the shack had people in it, they did not touch it.
“They demolished only shacks that were empty.”
