Winile Secondary School, in Zonkizizwe, became a special focal point on Nelson Mandela International Day, as the metro and its partners gave the dilapidated school a total facelift as part of the response to the 67 minutes of giving back to humanity.
Led by Ekurhuleni’s executive mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele, the metro and its partners, such as SABC2 and Daily Sun and organisations such as the Red Ants and Umsinsi Health Care worked tirelessly to improve the conditions of the school, with the view to making it an environment conducive for learning and teaching.
The work included replacing broken windows and dysfunctional doors.
It also included fixing the ablution facilities and pavement, and painting classrooms.
The school was also boosted with the planting of a vegetable garden, its nutritional programme.
Ekurhuleni and its partners then proceeded to Zonkizizwe’s Peace Maker Home Based Care Centre, to donate office equipment (a laptop and 100 chairs) to make the administrative work of the home-based care facility much easier.
Furthermore, the centre received ablution facilities, as well as an essential income-generating initiative, through the planting of a vegetable garden.
