Drunk drivers’ bubble popped by EMPD

Drunk drivers have to answer to EMPD.

Areas with a large number of horrific crashes and grossly inconsiderate driving were the focus of an EMPD Public Order Policing Unit operation.

The operation took place from 10pm on August 31, to 4am on September 1.

During the operation, 15 drivers were arrested.

The offences that lead to the arrests were attributed to drunken driving.

The unit’s operation resulted in the arrest of four drivers in Katlehong, four drivers in Springs, one in Germiston, two in Boksburg and another four in Tembisa.

Cases of suspected drunken driving were registered against all the suspects at police stations in their respective areas.

In another recent operation, the unit members had their hands full when they had to tackle the task of crowd control in various areas in the metro.

Between August 26 and August 27, the unit was asked to perform crowd control in Ward 93, at the Germiston Civic Centre.

In dealing with the public violence and malicious damage to property experienced at the Germiston Civic Centre on August 26, the unit members arrested 60 of the 109 suspects involved in the invasion and vandalising of the political headquarters offices.

Other areas that required the crowd control services of the unit included Alberton’s Civic Centre and Ward 50 in Katlehong, where the minister of Minerals and Energy attended an event.
