GCN received a frantic call from a distraught pensioner who had been scammed.
The pensioner, who wishes to remain anonymous, was at a Lambton shopping centre when she was approached by a young man.
The young man pointed out an elderly gentleman and told her that the man was a TV personality, known for “doubling” money.
The young man asked the man to “double” his money and gave the man R500.
The old man told the two to wait and disappeared for a while and on his return gave the young man R1 000.
The elderly gentleman then offered to do the same for the pensioner.
Caught up in the scam, the pensioner gave the man R200.
He again told her to wait, which she did, but this time the man did not return.
The younger man had also disappeared.
The pensioner realises that she got caught in the scammers’ web and wishes to warn others not to be as gullible.
Be alert and be aware, and remember if it sounds too good to be true it usually is.
