Katlehong police have arrested a 37-year-old man on charges of rape and murder.
The arrest came after a four-year-old girl was found hung in a derelict building in Mofekeng section, Katlehong on Monday.
The child had allegedly been raped and then hanged on a mounted steel hook in the building, which is used by residents in the area as a dumping ground.
Her body was discovered by a community member who immediately contacted the SAPS.
“Upon the police’s arrival the child’s half-naked body was found hanging in the building,” said Capt Mega Ndobe, communications officer for the Katlehong police.
“Her underwear, shoes and some of her clothes were lying on the ground near her.”
It is alleged that the girl went missing on September 8.
The police started their investigations immediately and followed leads until they arrested the 37-year-old man in Padima section, Katlehong.
It is alleged that the man was a family friend.
He appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court on Wednesday on charges of rape and murder, and the case was postponed until September 19 for further investigation.
The man was remanded in custody.
