Ekurhuleni takes people back to their roots

Back to your roots with song, dance and food.

Residents are in for a treat as the metro gears up to celebrate Heritage Day.

Ihashi Elimhlophe, Mahotela Queens, Malik and African Music Bombers are some of the famous musicians that Ekurhuleni residents will be celebrating their heritage with on September 21 at KeDitsilane Cultural Village in Katlehong.

Bholoja, Mohato and traditional dance groups from all corners of Ekurhuleni will join the artists on stage.

The day promises to be a colourful cultural feast.

The day’s festivities will begin with a carnival parade which will see 2 000 performers taking to the streets of Vosloorus and Katlehong to showcase their talents, costumes and splendid floats.

The four-kilometre procession will begin at the Vosloorus Stadium at 10am and will head for KeDitselane.

An extra element of excitement has been added to the parade in the honouring of the Ekurhuleni struggle icons.

Performers adorned in characterised masks of the faces of the icons are to lead the procession and, upon their arrival at the venue, praise signers will acknowledge and celebrate them.

Once the parade has commenced the cultural food and dance festival will begin, this will be followed but a star studded concert.

On Sunday September 22, from 10am to 4pm, the Heritage Day celebrations and commemorations will take on a more serious tone and will address the matter of male circumcision with traditional leaders.

This will be done through an indigenous knowledge systems dialogue held in KeDistalene.
