Thomas Titus Nkobi Memorial Park has come under fire, with reports of several tombstones being defaced and damaged, allegedly by careless workers.
The GCN spoke with Hans Robbertse, whose parents are buried in the memorial park.
He said he was visiting his parent’s grave when he saw a TLB (earth mover), that was travelling between the tombstones crash into one of them, breaking it.
When Robbertse asked who would pay for the tombstone’s repair, he was rudely told to leave, as this matter was none of his concern.
Upon closer inspection of the cemetery, Robbertse discovered there are a large number of tombstones that have been badly damaged by the TLB.
He decided to visit the cemetery’s main offices, where he reported what he had seen and the behaviour of the cemetery’s staff.
He was told that someone would contact him.
“No one ever got back to me,” he said.
“I would like to know who is responsible for the tombstone repairs and why such a large machine is needed and used in an area where space is so limited.”
The GCN contacted the metro for comment, but, at the time of going to press, none had been received.
