In a move that is set to turn around Ekurhuleni’s high unemployment rate and promote inclusive economic growth and development, the metro will become Gauteng’s inland port, a major project for freight transport, in view of expected increase in demand for freight movement.
Known as the Tambo Springs Inland Port, the project will drive an inclusive and sustainable Gauteng city region that promotes a developmental and equitable society.
This dream was realised on Friday, October 25, at the Transport Indaba, at the Germiston Council Chambers, when a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Ekurhuleni, the Gauteng Provincial Government and Transnet Freight Rail.
CEO of Transnet Freight Rail Siyabonga Gama is expected to disclose further details about the inland ports soon.
Ekurhuleni executive mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele, chief executive officer of the Gautrain Management Agency Jack van der Merwe and head of Ekurhuleni Transport, Planning and Provision Yolisa Mashilwane spoke on the progress regarding the rolling out of the Integrated Public Transport Network and the Ekurhuleni Bus Rapid Transport (BRT).
