World Food Day celebrated

Ithembelihle LSEN School Celebrates World Food Day.

Ithembelihle celebrated World Food Day on Friday, October 18.

World Food Day is celebrated annually on October 16, and aims to raise awareness ofthe importance of healthy eating.

Leonor Ngozi, principal of Ithembelihle, welcomed representatives of schools from all over the Ekurhuleni North District, who visited the school to share this special occasion with them.

Various officials from the district office of the Department of Education were also present.

Some of the speakers at the event encouraged everybody to start their own vegetable gardens at home or at their respective schools, while others delivered informative presentations focusing on the importance of healthy eating habits.

Pupils of Ithembelihle entertained the guests with topic relevant poems, an oral presentation, as well as a beautiful rendition of the song “We are the world.”

Ithembelihle is one of a very few schools accredited at the Department of Health as a Health Promoting School.

The school established a vegetable garden four years ago, with the financial assistance and expertise supplied by the company Group Five.

This company is still involved in the upkeep and maintenance of this garden and is a very active partner to Ithembelihle.

Eva Maako, from the Department of Education, informed those present of the requirements for becoming an accredited Health Promoting School and offered her department’s assistance to any school who would like to follow Ithembelihle’s example.

The occasion came to an end with guests enjoying a delicious and, of course, healthy meal prepared by Ithembelihle.
