Business robbery spree halted

Five men arrested for suspected stolen goods.

A group of five men, using a grey Toyota Venture, notorious for targeting Pakistani-owned “spaza” shops and other businesses in Kathorus area, were arrested in Katlehong, by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police, recently.

Information provided by members of the community was followed up by the Metro Police, who started searching for the vehicle and the suspects.

The Metro Police closed in on the vehicle when it was sighted in Katlehong.

After a thorough search of the vehicle, a laptop (that was recently stolen from a shop in Katlehong) and a number of cellphones were recovered.

One of the suspects showed the Metro Police their “safe house”, where later that day two unlicensed firearms were found and confiscated by the metro.

All five suspects were detained at the Katlehong North Police Station, on charges of possession of suspected stolen goods, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

At least eight other armed business robberies that were committed recently, in the Kathorus area, have been linked to the five suspects.

The five suspects, aged between 25 and 30, appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court.
