A Dinwiddie Primary School teacher has been suspended following allegations that she showed pupils a pornographic movie.
The matter was reported to the Germiston SAPS on Thursday, March 20, by a pupil’s mother, and a case of child pornography was opened against the teacher.
“Yes, we opened the case and transferred it to the Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for investigation.
“It is alleged that a female teacher made pupils watch a pornographic movie on her laptop at the school,” said AndrĂ© de Jager, the spokesperson for the Germiston police.
A 10-year-old girl told her mother and she opened a case.
The girl told her mother the teacher had taken three other children to the school’s storeroom to watch the movie.
“She told me that the teacher asked them if they knew what porn was and played the movie,” said the mother, who cannot be named to protect the identity of her child.
“We are extremely concerned about these allegations,”said Gauteng Education Department spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane.
“The safety of children is a priority for us.
“We will put the teacher on a precautionary suspension and institute an independent investigation into this matter.”
She added that the department would also ensure that the school co-operates fully with the Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit’s investigation.
The GCN also called Dinwiddie Primary School for comment.
“Nothing has been proven yet, as the matter is still under investigation,” said a spokesperson for the school.
“The teacher has since been suspended, as a precaution.
“The school will release an official statement on the matter once the investigation has been concluded.”
