An accident waiting to happen, says DA

DA calls for the metro to close open storm water manholes urgently.

The DA said it is essential that the metro reacts much faster to replace missing manhole covers, as the holes pose a serious safety risk to residents.

Two such storm water manholes, standing open on the corner of Brenda Road and Dewlish Avenue, in Dinwiddie, have been reported to the metro by residents, as well as the Ward 39 councillor Michael Kriek, but have not yet been replaced.

“These missing manhole covers are dangerous to passing pedestrians, as they are not easy to see in the grass and are especially dangerous in the dark,” Kriek said.

“The DA demands that the metro takes immediate action.

“This is an accident waiting to happen, which could have deadly consequences for an elderly person or a young child, and could cause serious injury to anyone who falls in.

“Residents also have the right to know their domestic animals are safe from such risk.”
