Gauteng provincial government convenes provincial safety summit

Provincial safety summit held in Germiston.

The Gauteng provincial government convened a Safety Indaba, in a bid to renew its commitment to fighting crime in the province, on Thursday.

The indaba was held at the Gauteng Traffic Police Pound, in Gosforth Park.

The summit afforded all law enforcement agencies, municipalities, CPFs and social cluster departments an opportunity to have a conversation with Gauteng Premier David Makhura and all responsible principals within the cluster, on how best to deal with the issue of crime in Gauteng.

The social cluster is constituted by the departments of community safety, health, education, social development, human settlements, and sport, arts, culture and recreation.

In his address to the media, Makhura said: “Crime is a matter of great concern, especially certain types of crimes, for example, assault GBH, murder and robbery.

“We are first and foremost looking for an unwavering and solid commitment from law enforcement agencies, especially the SAPS, that they are determined to win the war against crime in the province.”

Makhura said that the indaba also aimed at boosting the morale of those in law enforcement and they were also reviewing the current Gauteng Safety Strategy.

“Every person must be mobilised to reduce crime in the province,” he added.

“We are here to say that, in our province, we won’t allow the criminals to take over.”

He urged the community and civil society to give their commitment to the fight against crime and not to let criminals take over the streets.

“We will leave here feeling rejuvenated for the next five years and with the rudiments of a new safety plan,” Makhura said.

Residents are invited to make submissions about how to create a safer Gauteng, via email, to tebogo.umanah@gauteng.gov.za and duxita.mistry@gauteng.gov.za
