Metro explains the use of sprinklers

Why does the metro water their gardens while residents sit without water?

With the threat of water shortages still fresh in the minds of Germiston residents, many would like to know why the metro continued to water their gardens throughout the crisis.

The GCN fielded a large number of complaints from residents throughout the metro, reporting that the municipality is still using their sprinklers (irrigation system) to water the gardens at the council chambers in Germiston in the early hours of the morning.

The GCN approached the metro to find out:

  •  If the allegations were true?
  •  If so, how could the metro encourage residents to use water sparingly when they are not doing the same?

Lebogang Ramashala, senior media officer with the metro’s department of communications and brand management, released the following statement:

“The metro’s parks department is not making use of the main water lines, but rather underground water pumped into a reservoir under the Civic Centre.

“This water is not suitable for drinking.”
