A Geographic Information System (GIS) is an exciting and functional piece of equipment that offers maps on which one can analyse terrain.
November 19 is World GIS Day, the annual salute to geospatial technology and its power to transform and better our lives.
In celebrating this day the metro will, on Friday, host an informative session to educate and to demonstrate the real-world applications that are making a difference in society.
GIS is a device used for collecting spatial data, planning new townships, improvement of existing infrastructure, communications, environmental management, refuse, water, electricity, waste and so much more.
“GIS day celebrations will include workshops, tour map galleries, GIS technology demonstrations and career opportunities that exist in this field,” said metro spokesman Themba Gadebe.
The event is open to all to attend and will be held on November 21, from 8.30am to 1pm, at the Civic Centre Library Gallery, corner of CR Swart and Pretoria roads, Kempton Park.
