Power cable damaged during repairs
Despite the metro's promises many residents reported that the power only came on late into the evening.
On Wednesday, the GCN was inundated with calls reporting a power outage in both Albemarle and Dinwiddie.
Residents reported that their power had been out since Tuesday morning, without an explanation from the metro.
The GCN approached the metro for comment on the matter and the divisional head of the department of communication and brands management, Mandlakazi Mpahlwa-Sigcawu, said: “The metro assures Germiston residents and businesses that technicians are working tirelessly around the clock to restore power to all the affected areas.
“Power was reported to have gone off yesterday, between 10am and 11am, due to two damaged underground 33Kv ring feed cables supplying power to the Albemarle substation.
“The affected areas are Albemarle, Dinwiddie and Norton Small Farms.
“Upon investigating the cause of the outage, technicians discovered that the cables to be repaired are situated very deep underground, requiring the use of excavating machines.
“Technicians drilled into one of the cables, resulting in repair work taking longer than what was expected.
“Power is expected to be restored this afternoon by 5pm (Wednesday).
“In the interim residents are urged to treat all electrical networks and equipment as electrically alive.
“The municipality apologises for any inconvenience caused.”
Despite the metro’s promises, many residents reported that the power only came on late into the evening or the next day.
