Man shot during police chase

Members of the Germiston Flying Squad apprehended a suspect after a high speed chase.

It has been reported that members of the Germiston Flying Squad shot and wounded a suspect in a high speed chase.

The incident took place last Monday afternoon when, it is alleged, members of the JMPD Crime Prevention Unit spotted five men behaving suspiciously, while they were conducting a stop-and-search operation in the Dudeer area.

When the men got into a blue Volvo and drove away, JMPD members decided to follow them.

When he noticed the officers following, the vehicle’s driver sped away.

In the Eikenhof area, members of the Germiston Flying Squad joined the chase.

It is reported that, in Phola Park Extension One, Thokoza, the vehicle came to a stop and the occupants spilled out, running in different directions.

As officers chased after them, one of the men drew a gun, but, before he was able to fire a shot, a member of the Flying Squad shot him in the upper body.

The other four men managed to escape the police, while the wounded suspect was taken to hospital under police guard.

He will be charged with unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm, upon his release.

Officers seized the vehicle and the unlicensed firearm, recovered from the wounded suspect.

During their primary investigation, officers discovered that the vehicle’s licence disc had been tampered with.

Officers are still in the process of determining whether or not the car was stolen, as well as searching for the four men who escaped.

“The community is asked to be on the lookout for these men, as they are believed to be armed and dangerous.

“If anyone has any information on their whereabouts they should contact their local police station immediately,” said communications officer for the Katlehong police Capt Mega Ndobe.
