Finance MEC Barbara Creecy recently delivered her budget speech, in which she allocated a total of R2-billion to fund development in the eastern part of Gauteng.
This includes Tsakane Extension 22, Leeuwpoort and Germiston South.
The Eastern Development Corridor is anchored around the automotive sector and the knowledge-based economy.
The human settlement department has set aside R983.9-million towards the provision of housing units in Chief Albert Luthuli, John Dube Extension Two, Tsakane Extension 22, Germiston South, Leeuwpoort, Rietfontein and Claysville Extension 45, and the redevelopment of hostels in Springs and Tembisa.
To improve access to quality education R563-m will be spent towards the construction of new primary and secondary schools, including the Tokoza area, Chief Albert Luthuli Park and Langaville.
The department of roads and transport has set aside R112.9-m for road upgrades.
The department of health will spend R254-m on equipment and construction of staff residences at Thele Mogwerane Hospital; and the rehabilitation and maintenance of health facilities in this region.
A budget of R12.8-m has been set aside to complete both the Kingsway and Palm Ridge community libraries.
An amount of R18.2-m has been allocated to the social development department for construction work at the Mary Moodley Child Care Youth Centre, in Benoni.
This includes the upgrading of all social development facilities, to adhere to the Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements, and planning for the construction of early childhood development centres.
In partnership with the metro, the Wattville Agri-Park will be expanded to ensure that it reaches its maximum potential.
A sum of R28-m has been made available towards the bulk infrastructure investment for the realisation of the jewellery manufacturing precinct, within the industrial development zone.
