Well-known midwife passes away

Family mourns loss of Sister Cramer.

Martha Cramer, a well-known figure in the Germiston community, recently passed away at the age of 96.

She was born Martha Mattie Susana Groenewald, in De Aar, in the Western Cape, on February 2, 1919.

But to all who knew her she was known as Sister Cramer.

In 1937 she moved to Johannesburg and, on July 7, 1939, she married Nicholus Cramer.

Nicholus passed away in 1976.

Sister Cramer is survived by her three children, Nicolean Vorster, Eddie and Mariana Wescomb, nine grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Sister Cramer trained as a general nurse at the Johannesburg General Hospital and, in 1946, started working as a nurse and midwife at the hospital.

She worked all over the East Rand, including Germiston, Elsburg, Wadeville, Primrose, Wychwood, Alberton, Edenvale and Bedfordview.

During her career she delivered thousands of East Rand babies.

One of the highlights of her career as a midwife was starting a baby clinic in Bedfordview, in 1969.

At the time of her death Sister Cramer was living at the Rand Aid, Elphin Lodge, Ron Smith Care Centre, in the frail care section.

Her memorial service was held in the chapel at Rand Aid.
