The Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) has released a statement confirming that five people lost their lives in five separate incidents which happened around the City of Ekurhuleni on Saturday, June 4.
According to DEMS spokesperson, William Ntladi, the body of an unknown man was discovered after firefighters extinguished a shack fire in Langaville near Tsakane on Saturday evening. Three other male patients were also declared dead on the scene by DEMS paramedics in three separate incidents, two on the N3 freeway and the other on the R21 Albertina Sisulu northbound freeway opposite OR Tambo International Airport on Saturday evening as well.
The first incident happened around 18:20 on the N3 northbound just after the Grey Avenue off-ramp in Dinwiddie and the second southbound under the Leondale Road bridge next to Spruitview almost an hour later. Both the N3 incidents are believed to be hit-and-runs as no vehicles were found on scene.
The R21 accident happened on the northbound freeway and the vehicle involved stopped about 100m away from the point of impact. In all three accidents, pedestrians and vehicles were involved.
The fifth patient to be declared dead was the driver of a light motor vehicle in Dalview, Brakpan, who died in a single vehicle crash. The dead driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a stationary object. Jaws of Life had to be used to remove him from the wreckage.
Two other passengers from the vehicle sustained multiple trauma injuries and were admitted to Sunshine Hospital in serious but stable conditions for further medical treatment. In all road accidents Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officers took over for further investigations.
