Police crack down on illegal alcohol sales

The Primrose police arrest five suspects for selling liquor without a license.

With the festive season on the horizon, the Primrose police have redoubled their efforts to crack down on the illegal sale of alcohol.

During a recent operation that saw officers patrolling the Makause and Marathon informal settlements on foot, five suspects aged between 21 and 41 years old were arrested for selling liquor without a licence.

Two of the accused were arrested in Marathon with the remaining three being arrested in Makause.

“Police stopped and observed each of the alleged taverns before approaching.

“To our disgust not one of the five tavern owners had a licence to sell alcohol,” said communications officer for the Primrose police, Sgt Styles Maome.

These two men were among five men arrested by the Primrose police for selling liquor without a licence.

The men were taken to the Primrose Police Station pending their appearance in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court.

Most of the accused paid an admission of guilt fine before being released while others were warned to appear in court at a later date.

“It is a crime to sell liquor without a licence and we ask the community to refrain from doing so,” Maome said.
