Various programmes initiated in mayor’s 100 days
Mayor completes 100 days with a renewed social contract from the people.
The executive mayor of Ekurhuleni, Clr Mzwandile Masina, has completed 100 days in office, closing the period off with a renewed sense of vigour and a socially-oriented service delivery programme.
The metro reports that the 100-days period served as a pivotal start for the new administration to interact directly with communities and make an assessment of urgent interventions.
“The 100 days afforded us an opportunity to assess things we could have done but didn’t,” Masina said. “We are encouraged to resuscitate the social contract with our people. This sentiment is demonstrated by the number of achievements in the period.”
The mayor’s 100-day programme included increasing the bursary scheme for deserving students from R10-million to R100-m.
The metro has also opened three new clinics, launched the e-verification system for capturing indigent applications, introduced chronic medication distribution centres, arranged the release of land to accredited faith-based organisations, and improved recreational facilities.
Masina further undertook to hand over 292 houses and 280 title deeds, acquire the house of the late Chris Hani for heritage purposes, and conduct crime operations in hotspots like Germiston, Kempton Park and Boksburg.
The mayor has committed to finalising the 100 Vukuphile construction intakes, empower a recycling co-operative in Tembisa and identify land for the construction of a hospitality school in the Kempton Park area.
Masina has placed emphasis on strong working relations with coalition partners in council in order to ensure that service delivery isn’t compromised.
“Consultation is vital in order to ensure that the coalition works effectively for the greater benefit of our people. We are working as a collective. Nothing should compromise the social contract we have with the citizens of Ekurhuleni.
“The 100 days are only the beginning and Ekurhuleni remains committed to ensuring that the metro is a world class region that drives a developmental agenda which caters for its entire community and stimulates investment locally and internationally.”
