Six-car crash leaves two dead, two critical

Emergency services raced to the scene of a crash involving multiple vehicles on the N3 highway.

Two motorists were killed after six light motor vehicles were involved in a crash on the N3 highway in the early hours of December 4.

The accident happened between the Leondale Road and Old Heidelberg Road off-ramps and the highway had to be closed to traffic in both directions.

Two people sustained critical injuries and seven others escaped with minor injuries.

All the injured were transported to Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital for medical care.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) rescue teams from both the Wadeville and Hlahatsi fire stations swiftly responded to the scene after receiving the call at about 2.05am.

“The drivers were stuck behind their steering wheels when the rescue teams arrived and specialised hydraulic rescue tools, the ‘jaws of life’, had to be used to free the injured and recover the deceased from two of the wrecks. Two male drivers were declared dead on the scene by the paramedics,” said William Ntladi, DEMS district manager media liaison.

“As per information received on scene, it is alleged that one of the vehicles was driving on the southbound carriageway, against the traffic flow, resulting in a head-on collision with another vehicle.

“Two other motorists tried to avoid the crash and subsequently ended up crashing into two vehicles travelling on the northbound carriageway.

“Both sides of the highway had to be closed to traffic until the accident scene could be cleared.”

EMPD is investigating the cause of the accident.
