Mother charged after baby’s death

A woman has been charged with child neglect after allegedly leaving one of her three-month-old twins locked in a shack.

A 26-year-old woman from the Mavimbela Section, in Katlehong, was arrested recently by the Katlehong police for child neglect.

The arrest was made after one of the woman’s three-month-old babies died after allegedly being left alone in a shack while she went drinking.

“It is alleged that the woman decided to take only one of the baby girls with her when she went drinking at a local tavern.

“She left the second baby locked in the shack and when she returned the next morning she found the baby dead and partially eaten by rats,” said Capt Mega Ndobe, from the Ekurhuleni West Cluster.

The police were informed about the incident and the woman was arrested for child neglect.

“The remaining child has been sent to live with her father,” Ndobe said.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the child’s death.

The accused appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court where the cast was postponed for further investigation.
