New uniforms for 600 needy learners across Ekurhuleni

The school uniform project is an initiative that seeks to ensure that children from poor and vulnerable families get a school uniform for the New Year.

As the new year approaches, many families are preparing their children for a new year at school.

With this in mind the Gauteng Department of Social Development, with the help of Sustainable Livelihood, handed out over 600 school uniforms to underprivileged learners in Ekurhuleni.

The beneficiaries came from local schools around Katlehong, Thokoza and Vosloorus.

The handover forms part of the school uniform project, a Gauteng Provincial Government initiative that seeks to ensure that children from poor and vulnerable families acquire school uniforms.

In addition to the uniforms, representatives from the department also distributed food parcels to the needy families and held a special benefit concert in partnership with iBelieve Foundation.

Addressing parents and students, Sustainable Livelihood director July Maphosa said, “Each year, through the Bana Pele Programme, the government is able to identify families who are unable to afford school uniforms for their children.

“Part of a basket of services offered to children includes free access to clinics for health screening, free scholar transport, and psychosocial services to parents and children.

“Our target is to ensure that by the end of this financial year, we would have provided school uniforms to 136 500 children in the province.”
