Police crack down on the illegal sale of alcohol

Alcohol abuse remains a problem in the informal settlements – say police.

Eleven illegal taverns were shut down and 11 suspects, aged between 26 and 52 years old, arrested during a recent Primrose police operation.

The operation was held in the three informal settlements in Primrose, namely the Makause, Marathon and Delport informal settlements.

Officers entered the informal settlements on foot and approached several addresses where residents were known to buy alcohol.

“At each of the taverns police asked the owner for a liquor licence.

“If they were unable to show officers a licence they were arrested, their tavern shut down and the alcohol within the tavern confiscated,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

The arrested suspects were detained at the Primrose Police Station, and were later released after paying an admission of guilt fine.

“We continue to experience challenges in the informal settlements, with a large number of the crimes committed being related to liquor abuse.

“Crimes like murder, assaults and robberies continue to increase in the informal settlements,” said Maome.
